How To Configure Windows XP Firewall for Express Digital Software*

If you have installed Windows XP Service Pack 2, you may have noticed a performance change in your Express Digital software, or any software that requires access to a network or the Internet.

Service Pack 2 incorporates a firewall designed and intended to help protect your computer from both malicious users and malicious programs. Of course, there are countless legitimate programs that require Internet access to function correctly. For your security, Windows Firewall has a default setting of maximum protection. This means that all programs are denied access to the Internet.

Microsoft provides a quick and easy way to change those settings and allow specific programs to access the Internet. The following is a brief description of what settings to change to allow your Express Digital software to access the Internet through the XP firewall. For a more complete description of how to use the XP firewall, Express Digital strongly recommends you to consult the online documentation at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/internet/sp2_wfintro.mspx.

How To Configure Windows XP Firewall
Click Start and then click Control Panel.
In the control panel, click Windows Security Center.
Click Windows Firewall.
You should see a window like:

Make sure your Don’t allow exceptions check box is not checked.
Click on the Exceptions tab.
Click Add Program from the buttons at the bottom of the dialog box.

Select the program you would like to allow access for from the installed programs list provided on this screen. If for some reason you do not see your program listed you may click Browse and point to the executable file you would like to use. For example, you might browse to C:\Program Files\Express Digital\Photoreflect.com Publisher\Publisher.exe

Click on Change Scope to make sure that Any Computer is selected and then click OK.
Click OK on the Add a Program dialog box.
It is not required, but we recommend that you check the box for Display a notification when Windows Firewall blocks a program. This setting will give you more control over what the firewall is actually blocking.
Click OK to close the Windows Firewall dialog box.
* While Express Digital strongly recommends the use of Anti-virus and Firewall technology on every computer system, this document is not an endorsement of the Microsoft Windows Firewall included in Service Pack 2, it is simply a quick reference guide for those who choose to use it.
